Drama therapy allows us to enter a play space where reality is suspended for a time so creativity may be sourced and used in action. By developing the capacity to ‘play’ we are able to engage with and experiment with ourselves, our life experiences, life themes and roles. Drama and movement become vehicles for us to make meaning of our personal stories and we begin the journey of transformation and integration to the authentic and spontaneous person we really are.

In our everyday lives we contain our bodies, we restrict our movements, walking, sitting, performing task orientated actions. Dance therapy invites us to fully inhabit our bodies, to feel grounded when so often we are living in our ‘heads’. We access feeling and sensation and physicalize this in the here and now. As we grow comfortable to express ourselves we discover more freedom and excitement to be in our own skin. We dance our way to a new physical freedom.

Sound is vibration and sounding provides an active opportunity to listen to our bodily intuition and give expression to it through resonance. It is a potent avenue to release old wounds and it honours the process of grief that too often we must quickly move on from. The body holds this grief until such time as it builds and must be released or it exhibits it’s symptoms through illness. To use our voice through sounding we can unlock blockages and tension to change our emotional state.

Our inner world is represented in sandscapes as we spontaneously choose symbols and create a sand image using those symbols (eg; people, coloured stones, shells, mythical creatures, bridges, houses, cars, vegetation). It may be a directed or non-directed image depending on the context of the therapeutic session. The image may represent literal events, or explore the unconscious world of our dreams and life stories. The creation of the image is multidimensional thus the experience of sandplay therapy involves, thinking, feeling, intuition and sensation.

Creative Art

Through creative expression we are enabled to make use of our imaginative resources to access inner messages. Symbols, colour and form take shape through different mediums such as painting, clay sculpture, mask making and poetry writing. It is a kinetic process that is used to discover unknown aspects of the self and release feelings. While the completed product may offer insight by studying its symbolic meaning it is the creative process that offers us another avenue of communication that often verbal therapy alone cannot.

There is vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening, that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique.

And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost.
